The 8 Fruits and Vegetables Highest in Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for the body to function properly. It is crucial for optimal eye health, it helps the immune system to function well and it is a key vitamin for good bone and cell growth.

So, which fruits and vegetables contain the highest amounts of vitamin A?

They are:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Winter squash
  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Red bell pepper
  • Mangos
  • Cantaloupe
  • Spinach

There are 2 types of vitamin A. There is the preformed active vitamin A, which is found mainly in animal-derived products, and there is the provitamin A which comes from fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods.

Too much vitamin A in the body is toxic and can lead to dizziness, nausea, and headaches. It can also lead to other more serious issues such as liver and kidney disease, bone damage, and even death.

BUT here’s where it gets interesting.

According to Healthline, “Eating high amounts of the active form of vitamin A from animal foods, medications or supplements can be toxic. Excessive consumption of provitamin A from plant foods is unlikely.”

So make sure you are getting your Vitamin A from fruits and veggies.
